Scenes from "Living and Working in Space"

Space Housekeeping on Shuttle and Skylab

Captions:

[About debris] Carried by normal air circulation, they eventually collect on the intake filter screen of the air circulation system.

This three-day assortment of Skylab debris is being vacuumed as a part of routine housekeeping.

Note how the crewman eventually wraps his legs around the flexible air duck to hold himself in position.

Loose equipment and tools may float into spaces that are out of view and may be lost indefinitely.

Eventually, some may be dislodged by airflow and reappear drifting through a compartment moving toward an air intake screen. Housekeeping chores, such as taking out the garbage, are a bit more involved in space.

Captions (continued):

On Skylab, trash was placed in a special airlock, sealed in, and transferred to a holding tank. In space, successful housekeeping requires meticulous care in design and scrupulous crew discipline. In long life vehicles, the crew must be provided a well thought-out stowage plan and an inventory management system.
